Det tyskockuperade Paris 1942. Aktrisen Marion Steiner driver teatern Montmartre i sin judiske make Lucas plats. Han sägs ha flytt Frankrike, men gömmer sig i själva verket i källaren. Samtidigt anlitas stjärnan Bernard Granger till den pjäs som ska rädda den kämpande teatern.
