Berlijn, 1933. Elsa en Michel Wiener nemen een twaalfjarige Joodse jongen bij zich op, wiens vader door de SA vermoord is. Voor de zekerheid stuurt Michel zijn vrouw en pleegzoon naar Parijs, maar zelf blijft hij in Duitsland, waar hij uiteindelijk in een concentratiekamp terechtkomt.
