De tienjarige Mélanie, afkomstig uit een slagersfamilie, is een getalenteerde pianiste. Ze neemt deel aan het toegangsexamen voor het conservatorium, maar faalt. Zwaar ontgoocheld beslist Mélanie nooit meer een piano aan te raken. Een tiental jaar later ontmoet Mélanie de echtgenoot van de vrouw die destijds haar leven grondig veranderde.
