Tijdens de Spaanse Burgeroorlog belandt een circusclown in een werkkamp. Hij geeft zijn zoon Javier de levensles mee dat wraak de enige manier is om het noodlot af te wenden. Anno 1973 – Spanje zucht nog onder de Franco-dictatuur – is Javier zelf clown. Als hij verliefd wordt op Natalia, de beeldschone vriendin van zijn collega Sergio, haalt hij diens woede op de hals. Een bloederige strijd tussen de twee mannen is het gevolg, waarbij ook omstanders niet gespaard blijven.
