Stalingrad
In de herfst van 1942 sluiten twee Duitse soldaten een weddenschap af terwijl ze in een goederentrein zitten die door de Russische steppe dendert. De ene is Hanz Van Witzland, een idealistische jonge luitenant die ernaar snakt het militaire verleden van zijn aristocratische familie alle eer aan te doen.
