De oudere dame Louise blijft moederziel alleen achter in een verlaten dorp aan de kust wanneer ze de laatste trein van het seizoen mist. De bejaarde Robinson Crusoë ziet het als een uitdaging en besluit om de natuur en de eenzaamheid te overwinnen. Tijdens haar avonturen komen allerlei oude herinneringen naar boven (haar jeugd in naoorlogs Frankrijk, haar eerste liefde…) en maakt ze kennis met de pratende hond Pepper.
