André Masson is een specialist in moderne kunst en veilingmeester bij het beroemde veilinghuis Scottie's. Wanneer hij hoort dat er in het plaatsje Mulhouse een schilderij is ontdekt van Egon Schiele is hij aanvankelijk sceptisch, maar toch nieuwsgierig reist hij samen met zijn ex-vrouw en collega Bertina af om het werk te bekijken. Beide zijn met stomheid geslagen wanneer ze constateren dat het schilderij, een meesterwerk dat sinds 1939 vermist is en door de nazi's in beslag werd genomen, authentiek blijkt te zijn en nu in handen is van een nietsvermoedende jongeman en zijn moeder.
