Een portret van het leven van de Oostenrijkse kunstenaar Gustav Klimt (John Malkovich), wiens overvloedige en sensuele schilderijen een symbool werden voor de art nouveau-stijl eind 19e, begin 20e eeuw. Het verhaal speelt zich af in 1918, wanneer Klimt op punt van sterven ligt in zijn bed.
