In 1984 was John McEnroe de beste tennisspeler ter wereld. Zijn techniek verhief hij tot een kunst: hij sloeg niet zo hard als sommige van zijn concurrenten, maar wist de bal sneller te nemen dan zijn tegenstander. Hij wachtte de aanval zelden af en beschikte over een goede volley. Hij moest het in de finale van de Roland Garros opnemen tegen Ivan Lendl. Deze film gaat over die wedstrijd.
