Gilbert Valence ontdekt dat zijn dochter en schoonzoon in een autocrash omgekomen zijn. Ogenschijnlijk doet de tragedie hem niet veel, maar de oude man zal toch de tol moeten betalen van de shock die onvermijdelijk toe zal slaan. Hij wordt geconfronteerd met zijn eigen sterfelijkheid, en leert te accepteren dat de tijd voor hem ook nabij is.
