Biopic over de geliefde doch omstreden Franse componist Serge Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino), een zoon van Joods-Russische ouders. Serge groeit op in een door nazi's bezet Parijs, maar weet zich desondanks op te werken tot één van Frankrijk's grootste iconen van de 20e eeuw. Serge wil ontsnappen aan het ouderwetse chanson en nieuwe muzikale gebieden ontdekken, onder invloed van Britse en Amerikaanse popmuziek.
