Het verhaal speelt zich af na de Eerste Wereldoorlog in een klein Duits stadje. Anna is een Duitse weduwe die rouwt om de dood van haar verloofde. Hij kwam om het leven aan het front in Frankrijk. Anna bezoekt het kerkhof dagelijks.
