Italië, eind vijftiende eeuw. De pest, ofwel de Zwarte Dood, heeft voor veel dood en verderf gezorgd. Een vrouw, Benedetta Carlini genaamd, besluit om zich in een klooster te treden als novice in het dorpje Pescia, Toscane.
