En 1945, alors que le IIIe Reich est à l'agonie, le docteur Guibert est emmené de force, pour y soigner un blessé, dans un sous-marin à bord duquel des nazis et des sympathisants veulent tenter de se rendre en Amérique du Sud. Parmi eux, un général allemand, un chef de la Gestapo et son adjoint, un industriel italien et sa femme, un journaliste "collabo", un savant compromis.
