Au centre de ce drame se trouve Ebbo, un médecin, qui vit depuis presque 20 ans en Afrique avec sa femme Vera. Alors qu'Ebbo dirige un projet de lutte contre la maladie du sommeil, sa femme ne se sent plus à sa place sur le continent, surtout depuis que leur fille est retournée en Allemagne. Ebbo au contraire refuse de revenir dans son pays natal qui lui est devenu étranger.
