Kabwita, un jeune homme vivant avec sa femme et ses filles à Kolwezi, une ville du sud-ouest de la République démocratique du Congo, rêve d'acheter un terrain pour construire une maison. Pour ce faire, il produit du charbon de bois (makala), extrait des cendres d'un puissant arbre à bois dur. Transportant les sacs de charbon de bois à l'arrière de son vélo, il entreprend un dangereux voyage pour les vendre sur le marché.
