En 1936, le déclenchement de la guerre civile espagnole oblige Maria, une bonne soeur, à quitter son couvent. Elle trouve refuge dans un bordel, où elle fait connaissance avec un groupe de femmes anarchistes qui luttent contre le régime franquiste, mais aussi, plus généralement contre l'ordre établi.
