Un homme entre dans l'auberge d'une abbaye, quelque part en pleine montagne. Il s'appelle Roland Brissot, il a la main gauche gantée et porte un coffret sous le bras. Un orage éclate, plongeant les lieux dans l'obscurité. Lorsque la lumière revient, le coffret a disparu. L'homme raconte son histoire. Un an auparavant, il était un artiste raté. La femme qu'il aimait, une dénommée Irène, le méprisait. Un jour, un restaurateur lui vendit, pour une somme ridicule, un étrange porte-bonheur : une main momifiée, placée dans un coffret.
