Den rare, gamle opfinder Peddersen føler sig lidt ensom i sit røde, svenske hus. Naboen, Beda, forærer derfor Peddersen en kattekilling, som han døber Findus. Da han opdager, at katten kan tale, bliver de to uadskillelige venner. Siden indlemmer Peddersen en ny hane i sin hønsegård, og han giver den så meget opmærksomhed, at Findus frygter, at han er ved at miste sin bedste ven.
