Eliane ejer en gummiplantage i 1930'ernes Indokina, hvor hun bor sammen med sin adoptivdatter Camille. Eliane falder for den smarte søofficer Jean-Baptiste, men han vil hellere have Camille, der gengælder følelserne. Som hævn sørger Eliane for af Jean-Baptiste bliver sendt en afsides ø, men Camille følger efter på egen hånd.
