En un futuro la avanzada civilización terrestre descubre un lejano planeta habitado por unos seres completamente humanos pero tremendamente atrasados respecto a la Tierra. La humanidad envía a un equipo científico para investigar el descubrimiento. Una nave es situada en orbita para monitorizar la historia del mundo, y un infiltrado Rumata, es enviado para mezclarse con la cultura nativa, siempre guiado por una fuerte regla de no intervención.
