Segunda Guerra Mundial. Sentimental historia (con tintes autobiográficos) sobre la amistad entre un viejo antisemita y un niño judío en la Francia ocupada por los nazis. Un matrimonio judío, para poner a salvo a su hijo Claude, lo envía a vivir al campo con Pepe y Mémè, una pareja de ancianos católicos que acogen al niño sin saber que es judío. Pepe es un antisemita y anticomunista recalcitrante: está convencido de que los judíos y los comunistas son los responsables de todos los males que aquejan a Francia.
