A principio de los años 1920, Georges Laffont, traumatizado por lo vivido durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, decide cambiar de vida e irse a vivir a Alto Volta, en Africa, acompañado por el artista Diofo, que también sobrevivió a la guerra. Cargado de máscaras tribales, Georges regresa a París para encontrar a su hermano Marcel, excombatiente a quien la guerra dejó sordo y que ahora vive con su madre.
