Andalucía, siglo XIX. La inquietud política y el malestar social condicionan la vida del país y alientan la lucha y la revuelta. Manchado por un delito de sangre, Juan Cuenca vive refugiado en los montes andaluces y es perseguido por la justicia. A él se unen un minero que ha dado muerte a su capataz y un ingeniero amigo que, por defenderlo, ha matado al jefe de la mina.
