1862. El comodoro Sir Francis y el inventor Douglas inician en nombre de la Royal Society of Geography de Londres un viaje en globo bajo el mando del doctor Fergusson, que planea cruzar el África de Este a Oeste. Pero para cumplir esta hazaña tendrán que sortear innumerables aventuras en las que sus vidas estarán en serio riesgo.
