Normandía, 1819. Jeanne es una chica joven, inocente y repleta de sueños infantiles cuando regresa a casa tras acabar sus estudios escolares en un convento. Se casa con un vizconde local, Julien de Lamare, que no tarda en mostrarse como un hombre miserable e infiel. Poco a poco, las ilusiones vitales de Jeanne se desvanecen.
