Kuifje moet professor Zonnebloem gaan bewaken, die een dupliceermachine heeft uitgevonden en verblijft in een dorpje bij de grens tussen Syldavië en Bordurië. Rastapopoulos, een beruchte en meedogenloze internationale crimineel, probeert professor Zonnebloem en Kuifje weg te lokken door twee kinderen die in de buurt wonen te kidnappen. Het doel hiervan is om de machine in bezit te krijgen.
