In 1942 wordt de Duitse soldaat Stroszek vanuit Kreta naar het Griekse eiland Kos gestuurd om te herstellen van de in de oorlog opgelopen verwondingen. Hij moet daar een oud munitiedepot bewaken, wat een soort pro forma functie is, aangezien er nauwelijks oorlogsactiviteit is op dit eiland.
