De vier pinguïns Skipper, Kowalski, Junior en Rico beleven verschillende avonturen in Central Park Zoo en de stad New York samen met onder andere Koning Julien, Maurice en Mort. Ook komen de twee chimpansees Mason & Phil in de serie voor, terwijl ze in de film maar een kleine rol hadden. Er zijn ook nog andere dieren bijgekomen, o.a. Marlene de otter en Joey de kangoeroe.
