Il regista arriva a Tokyo in una sorta di pellegrinaggio in onore di Yasuiro Ozu, il grande maestro del cinema giapponese morto e dimenticato nel 1963, e al tempo stesso per filmare l'odierna realtà metropolitana della capitale. Le sue riprese documentano le incredibili trasformazioni intercorse in appena venticinque anni dalla sua scomparsa.
