1999. Seconda Guerra in Cecenia. Dopo l'uccisione dei genitori a cui ha assistito non visto, Hadji (nove anni) prende in braccio il fratellino neonato e fugge. La sorella maggiore, sopravvissuta, si mette a cercarli. Intanto Hadji, dopo aver messo al sicuro il neonato, incontra Carole, una funzionaria dell'Organizzazione europea per i diritti umani. La donna decide di occuparsi di lui. Seguiamo in alternanza anche le vicende del ventenne Kolia, recluta dell'Armata Russa.
