Jacques Mayano, reporter di guerra per un quotidiano francese, viene reclutato dal Vaticano per indagare su un'apparizione avvenuta in un villaggio del sud-est della Francia. Anna, orfana e novizia, afferma di aver visto la Vergine Maria. Lo straordinario evento, velocemente diffuso, ha condotto migliaia di pellegrini sul luogo della presunta epifania. Jacques, estraneo a questo mondo, accetta nondimeno di far parte della commissione d'inchiesta canonica, applicando la prassi empirica al trascendente.
