È il 1992, l’URSS è crollata e la Guerra Fredda è finita. Solo un uomo deve ancora scoprirlo: dall’interno della stazione spaziale MIR, Sergei, l’ultimo cosmonauta sovietico, può vedere l’intero pianeta ma non sa che la sua nazione non esiste più. L’agenzia spaziale non ha i fondi per riportarlo a casa ed è quindi costretto a prolungare in modo indefinito la sua permanenza in orbita, lontano dal suo paese e isolato dal resto del mondo.
