Jean, che si è appena congedato dalle truppe coloniali, incontra a Le Havre Nelly che vive, terrorizzata, con un losco tutore, il quale le ha ucciso il fidanzato. Jean e Nelly cercano di fuggire insieme, ma l'uomo è costretto a uccidere il tutore ed è lui stesso ucciso da un gangster che si vendica così per una dura lezione subita in precedenza da Jean.
