Dopo otto anni di sperimentazioni video, Godard torna al cinema: diviso in cinque tempi come una sinfonia musicale, nel film si intrecciano le vicende di tre personaggi un'intellettuale (Dutronc), la sua amante (Baye) e una prostituta (Huppert) - che stentano a trovare un senso e un centro nella società borghese e capitalistica.
