Sous le second Empire, le maquignon Jules Haudouin doit sa fortune à une jument née verte. À sa mort, il laisse ses biens à ses deux fils, Honoré et Ferdinand. Puis la guerre éclate et madame Haudouin, pour sauver son fils, est déshonorée par un sous-officier prussien. Dès cet instant, Honoré ne pense qu'à venger l'honneur familial.
