The gang attempt to rescue Queen Anne on her way to Broadwater Hall and warn her about Poynton’s plot but find themselves face to face with Devereux, escaping London after fleeing his trial. Realizing that the Queen must already have been captured, Nell races into the dangers of Broadwater itself. Meanwhile, Sofia, who has become suspicious of Thomas’ strange behavior, makes a shocking discovery that leaves her fighting for her life. Facing the final battle to save England, Nell, her sisters, and Rasselas all have their own important roles to play. And when Poynton reveals his greatest weapon yet, Nell must make an impossible choice about who to protect and who to sacrifice to try and defeat him.

Determined to put a stop to the lies about them once and for all, the gang arrives in London to smash up the printing presses. Meanwhile, Devereux faces trial and is horrified to discover that recent political events have put his case in jeopardy. Poynton uses his new position as the Captain of the Queen’s Bodyguard to tighten his net on Queen Anne and tries to convince Sofia to save her magical strength for the Jacobite invasion. Sofia, however, has other ideas: she plans to use a sample of Rasselas’ blood to get to Nell. When Nell and her sisters find Rasselas at the newspaper offices desperate to get the news out about Sofia and Poynton’s plot, they must fight to have his story published before it is too late and before Sofia’s magic catches up with them.

George finds herself kidnapped, along with the excitable Polly Honeycombe, by traveling actors who want to use them as bait to catch the infamous Nell Jackson. Blissfully unaware, Nell and Billy celebrate their heroism at Newgate. Maybe helping the downtrodden is their purpose? Maybe they should be saving the world. But Nell’s narrow escape has made Sofia even more desperate to catch her, and Poynton is at court in London making moves that will leave Queen Anne even more exposed. Rasselas faces dangers of his own, traveling back to Broadwater Hall to question Sofia about her involvement at Newgate. And when Nell arrives to save George from her kidnappers, she discovers a stranger and more perilous situation than she could have imagined.

Nell leaves Roxy and George at their Uncle Jack’s inn for protection while she and Rasselas head to London with a plan to rescue Devereux from prison. They struggle to imagine how they could break in until an emergency in the prison presents Nell with an opportunity. At Broadwater Hall, Poynton is impressed by Sofia’s progress with the dark arts, and she has become intoxicated by her new power. As Nell finds herself deep in the belly of Newgate prison, face-to-face with the injustices suffered by many of the inmates, Billy Blind has a revelation. When Sofia begins to conjure against her, Nell must use all her wits to protect the prisoners, herself, and Rasselas. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Nell, an unexpected threat catches up with George and Roxy at the coaching inn.

Racing to find help for George, Nell disguises herself as a member of the Scottish nobility and brings elderly physician Mr. Tuplow back to the plague cottage. Left alone with a worsening George, Roxy discovers that she might be able to use her own newfound magical intuitions to help. In London, powerful newspaper magnate Lady Eularia Moggerhangar promises to help Devereux clear himself of Isambard Tulley’s charges. Meanwhile, Thomas flees Broadwater Hall, enraged by news of Poynton’s imminent arrival. As Poynton brings Sofia further into his confidence, revealing to her a dark and deadly secret, George’s condition worsens, and Mr. Tuplow begins to suspect that Nell might not be exactly who she says she is.

They hide out in an abandoned cottage. Devereux splits from the gang but is captured and immediately recognized as Isambard Tulley. Meanwhile, news of Herne’s appearance and Nell’s supernatural powers spreads fast, including into the court of Queen Anne herself. Sofia, convinced there is some connection between the powerful Poynton and Herne, seeks him out to get some answers. As Sofia is drawn even further into Poynton’s dark web, Devereux finds himself locked up in Newgate Prison and Nell must find a way to heal George before it’s too late.

Lady Sofia, desperate to hunt Nell down, turns to the shadowy Earl of Poynton for help. Meanwhile, Nell’s best-laid plans are derailed when the notorious highwayman Isambard Tulley takes a shine to her. By teaming up with Tulley she unwittingly throws herself, her siblings, and Rasselas into even graver danger. As enemies both mortal and magical begin to close in, Nell will have to use all her strength to escape.
