En 1943, Charles Bailly, prisonnier de guerre français, décide de s'évader et de retourner en France. Il ne trouve comme stratagème qu'une vache, Marguerite, et un seau de lait pour traverser l'Allemagne de part en part. Après une première tentative manquée, il s'évade une nouvelle fois, mais Marguerite se perd dans un troupeau de vaches…
