Basada en hechos reales que sucedieron a finales del siglo XIX, es la histora de Marie Heurtin, una joven sordomuda y ciega de catorce años que no puede comunicarse con el mundo que le rodea, sumergiéndose por tanto en un horrible mundo de tinieblas. El padre de la pequeña, sin seguir el consejo del doctor que pretende internarla en un manicomio al considerar que Marie sufre idiocia, éste decide llevarla al Instituto de Larnay, cerca de Poitiers, regentado por una congregación de monjas que se ocupan de niñas, adolescentes y mujeres sordas.
