The Mwamba Pride is one of the strongest lion families in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley. At the helm is a trio of strong males, the most powerful lions in the land. The Mwambas rule a prime riverside territory teeming with zebras and antelope. But there’s one animal the Mwamba pride covets above all others… buffalo. It’s the ultimate prey – each animal is a ton of meat that could feed a whole pride for several days. But these giants are also dangerous… trampling hooves and wickedly sharp horns mean buffalos can be deadly, as well as being dinner.

Thandi and Lula are two-month-old wild dog pups … the only females in a litter of six. Lula loves to rough and tumble with her brothers, while Thandi is more of a loner, often exploring away from the others. They’ve been born into the ideal family – dedicated parents, and a pack of aunts and uncles who all share their food with the youngsters and take turns to babysit them. Their den is at the foot of a copse of mopane trees, just a short distance from the Luangwa River. It’s the ideal hunting ground, teeming with antelope. The future for the pups looks bright.

Three-year-old Chipadzua is an entitled young leopardess who should have left her mother’s side more than a year ago. She reached maturity at two years old and should have moved away to find her own territory, but this pampered princess just won’t fly the nest. Her mother, Malaika, is an expert hunter and it’s just too easy for Chip to freeload.
3. Misfit Comes of Age, The

The Misfit is a charismatic cub who’s had a rough ride. A timid oddball once bullied by his big brothers and rejected by his mother, this plucky young lion is now a teenager. But he and his family are going through more tough times. They’ve lost their adult male leaders, and the pride has fragmented. Once a twenty-strong force to be reckoned with, the Nsefu pride is now just nine lions. And one of them is the timid Misfit.

Milo is a young cub in the mighty Mwamba pride, which rules a territory on the west bank of the Luangwa River. 20-strong it’s ruled by the notorious Punks, a coalition of three strong brothers, it’s the largest pride for miles around, giving Milo the best start in life. But, in lion society, cubs are the glue that binds a pride. Milo should be one of many but he’s alone. Whilst the pride was out hunting, his sibling Poppy was taken by a wandering predator. The loss of Poppy ripples through the pride.

The pride’s dominant males, the fearsome Punks, are roaming away in neighbouring territories, with an eye to taking over other prides. So all the hunting falls to the pride females – nine strong lionesses who try to bring down antelope every day. But with six growing teenagers with bottomless appetites, and more than half of attempted hunts ending in failure, food is scarce.
