Hélène (Sophie Marceau) führt ein tristes Leben als Herausgeberin kitschiger Liebesromane. Doch als eines Tages die alte und herrlich exzentrische Amerikanerin Mrs. Mills (Pierre Richard) in das Appartement nebenan einzieht, kommt plötzlich wieder Schwung in ihren Alltag. Die beiden ungleichen Frauen freunden sich in Windeseile an und Mrs. Mills wird schließlich sogar das neue Werbegesicht für Hélènes Verlag – und das bringt großen Erfolg. Doch eigentlich verfolgt die alte Dame einen ganz anderen Plan. Und ist sie überhaupt eine Dame?
