Achtzehn Jahre nach ihrer Flucht aus Nazi-Deutschland kehrt die inzwischen zum gefeierten Hollywoodstar aufgestiegene Schauspielerin Macarena Granada mit gemischten Gefühlen in ihr Heimatland Spanien zurück, das unter der Diktatur Francos steht. Sie soll in einem großen Historienfilm die Rolle der Königin Isabella von Kastilien spielen. Am Set trifft sie viele ihrer früheren Künstlerfreunde wieder. Als einer von ihnen in ein Arbeitslager verschleppt wird, überschlagen sich die Ereignisse.
