Drei englische Touristen, Mitglieder der Familie Drummond, werden erschossen. Monatelang bleibt der Fall ungeklärt. Zwei der Söhne des Bauern Gaston Dominici beschuldigen überraschend ihren Vater des Mordes. Aus Enttäuschung über die Anklage seiner Söhne gesteht der Patriarch zunächst den Mord. Obwohl sein Sohn Gustave die Anschuldigung später zurückzieht und Gaston Dominici seine Unschuld beteuert, wird er schließlich auf Grund von Indizien zum Tode durch das Fallbeil verurteilt.
