Muxes

Oaxaca, Mexico is the homeland of the Zapotec people, and of the colorful, vibrant culture of muxes, a widely accepted third gender. Assigned male at birth, muxes, also known as Authentic Intrepid Seekers of Danger, defy stereotypes by taking on roles traditionally filled by either men or women and are known for their dress, artistry, and respect for female elders. Taking place in the weeks leading up to La Vela, an annual celebration of muxe culture, this heartfelt and eye-opening documentary captures the unique point-of-view of several muxe individuals who share empowering stories of overcoming discrimination, shedding light on those who have bravely rejected the gender binary in favor of living radically authentic lives.
