Inspired by true events, “The Cry of the Butterflies” chronicles the life of Minerva Mirabal, the Dominican lawyer and activist who was murdered on November 25, 1960, along with her activist sisters Patria and Maria Teresa, on the order of dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The story examines the events leading up to that tragic day and those which followed the heinous crime, including the United Nations marking November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, as the murders were another reminder of the gender-based violence prevalent across the world.
