Jeune provincial aux dents longues, Octave Mouret débarque dans le Paris du Second Empire. Il est entré au service de madame Hédouin qui dirige un grand magasin. Mariée à un commerçant à court d'argent, Berthe devient rapidement la maîtresse d'Octave et celui-ci applique ses dons commerciaux à redresser les affaires de son mari. Madame Hédouin comprend alors qu'elle pourrait trouver le meilleur des associés avec Octave.
