The players reveal their tight bond forged through many shared struggles and hardships pursuing their goal of representing Australia. Inspired by Cathy Freeman at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the Matildas pledge to create their own moment of history at the 2023 World Cup to motivate the next generation of young girls and boys.

After taking a break from football, the senior players are excited to return to the national squad as they prepare to take on Olympic champions, Canada. Mary Fowler joins two other Matildas team mates by signing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and a nervous Emily Gielnik arrives a day early for the national camp in Brisbane, ready to surprise her partner. With just 32 days of football before the World Cup squad is announced, coach Tony Gustavsson reveals time is running out to make the national squad. The group are moved by the bond with their loyal fans, while a special moment after the game brings both teams together and coach Tony Gustavsson to tears. An emotional Katrina Gorry leaves Australia with her baby for club football in Sweden. Senior players are rested, meaning a weakened squad will play against Spain and Portugal. Meanwhile, star player Ellie Carpenter collapses during the Champions League final with an injury that threatens to shatter her World Cup dreams.

With many family members watching from the stands, the first game against New Zealand ends dramatically as a half-time prediction by under-pressure coach, Tony Gustavsson, comes true in a dramatic display of the Matildas’ legendary never-say-die spirit.
