Afterwards Tracy secretly has a fully blown panic attack as her own anxiety begins to manifest. When Nick and Sarah return home they find it gutted, all their belongings are to be incinerated, but at least he is alive. Tracy’s fears continue to spiral as she fears the city’s water course may have been infected, and she quarantines a raft of ducks. Finally, with no further traces discovered and the contaminated areas cleaned, it looks like life in Salisbury may be able to return to near normal. Maybe life for Tracy too as she moves back in with her family. Charlie, the boyfriend of Dawn Sturgess, rummages through a charity bin. Charlie finds a perfume bottle, a perfect present for Dawn—holding a deadly secret, unknown to him. He presents her with the perfume bottle as a gift. She sprays herself with it and minutes later she collapses. She is taken to hospital on suspicion of an overdose. A day later Charlie also collapses. It becomes apparent that they have been contaminated with Novichok, stored in the discarded bottle. When Tracy hears she holds herself personally responsible and drives back into work, knowing the horror of the first attack is about to unleash itself on Salisbury all over again.

Emergency services descend on Salisbury’s bustling city center where they find Sergei and Yulia Skripal unconscious. The source of their illness is unknown. Nick Bailey is the police investigating officer. Following a visit to the Skripal’s home he also begins to fall ill. Tracy, the head of Wiltshire Council Public Health, normally responsible for day to day school kitchen and restaurant hygiene issues, is called into a counter terrorism emergency response meeting and asked to take charge of public health. Whitehall and the Cabinet Office are on speaker phone. In an instant her life has changed. It’s horrifying. The situation is critical: Sergei and Yulia are potential targets of a poison attack and the agent used remains unidentified. Tracy now realizes she is dealing with a potential disaster —she tries her best to manage the investigation blind. CCTV footage shows the Skripal’s movements around town, they have been everywhere potentially infecting the entire city center. Meanwhile Nick goes back to work, to his family home and then to the hospital. He isn’t displaying signs of illness and is released but the next morning is rushed to hospital after his wife, Sarah, finds him passed out on the couch. And it’s now that Tracy discovers that the poison used is a nerve agent called Novichok, one of the deadliest synthetic substances on earth. The implications are apocalyptic. Half a spoonful can kill 15,000 people. And the Skripals and Nick have unwittingly spread it across multiple sites all over Salisbury.
