The loss of Alec weighs heavily on Hezekiah, who feels responsible for his death. His title fight against Buster Williams is fast approaching and many key parties, including Peggy and Lonsdale, are relying on his victory. Time is fast running out for Mary as both head of the male Elephant gang, Indigo Jeremy, and agent of the Crown, Vance Murtagh, close in on her. Mary is racked with guilt over Alec's death whilst The Forty Elephants themselves are questioning her leadership. Sugar suffers the consequences of his actions against Treacle whilst Hezekiah summons up all his power for the world champion fight. Poised to run off with Mary to New York, Hezekiah learns the terrible truth about who was responsible for Alec's death.

Discovering that Lao has taken terrible revenge on an old foe, Mary finds herself under threat from an agent of the crown investigating the murder. At the same time, Mary's fearsome mother (and former Queen) is furious at the spotlight being thrown on the Elephant gang and plots to teach Mary a lesson. Ironically, Hezekiah has caught the Earl of Lonsdale's attention with his boxing prowess, and finds himself rising quickly through the West London boxing circuit with the Earl's backing. But Hezekiah is finding it harder and harder to protect Lao from the consequences of his actions. Things finally come to a head between Sugar and Treacle as the brothers clash in a brutal fight over their futures. And Alec pays the ultimate price for Mary's refusal to fall in line with the male Elephants.

Hezekiah makes his debut in the West London Boxing Club with the hope of impressing Peggy Bettinson. Things take a worrying turn at the end of the fight when Sugar makes an appearance to mock Hezekiah's new vocation, but Peggy's interest in this bitter rivalry is piqued. Mary secures an invite for herself and Hezekiah to attend Lonsdale's house for a banquet to welcome a recently arrived trade delegation from China. Everything now in place, Mary and the Forty Elephants stage an audacious heist, stealing silver gifted to the visitors by none other than Queen Victoria herself, whilst Hezekiah distracts the guests with a brilliant boxing display. However, Mary fails to notice that her other accomplice, Mr Lao, appears to be harboring a deep hatred for one of the visiting Chinese dignitaries.

An anarchist bombing threatens Mary's carefully laid plans. She is forced to make a brutal decision when she discovers that the bomber is none other than Eliza's secret lover, the tailor Saul Woolfe. Meanwhile, Mary takes Hezekiah out to the dazzling West End to meet Peggy Bettinson, the key figure in the burgeoning gloved boxing circuit. Seeing the opportunity to earn money pursuing this more gentlemanly, skilful sport, Hezekiah asks Alec to help train him in the 'sweet science'. Desperate for a rematch with Hezekiah, Sugar is furious to find that Mary has co-opted Hezekiah for her own ends. Jealousy and hate begin to eat away at him. Meanwhile, Mary's plans are coming together and she sets Alice Diamond off on her first task, to infiltrate the Earl of Lonsdale's house posing as a maid.

After their brutal fight, Hezekiah finds himself locked into a deadly rivalry with Sugar who sees him as a threat both in the ring and also for Mary Carr's affections. With Hezekiah's dream of becoming a Lion Tamer dashed, he turns to boxing for money. The Forty Elephants bolster their coffers with a raid on Harrods where they meet Alice Diamond, a shop girl who has set her sights on becoming a member of the gang. Alec is befriended by Jack Mac, an old soldier and brewer of questionable liquors who promises he can help make Alec and Hezekiah rich, but Mary has other plans. She steps up the plans for her heist by recruiting the help of both Hezekiah and Lao, and finds a way to stop him fighting Sugar again and getting injured or even killed.

East End of London, 1880s. Hezekiah Moscow and Alec Munroe, best friends from Jamaica, arrive in London to make their fortunes. Here they cross paths with Mary Carr, Queen of an all female criminal gang known as the Forty Elephants. Mary is planning her most daring heist yet and attempting to recruit Mr Lao, a Chinese exile and owner of Wapping's Green Dolphin boarding house, where Hezekiah and Alec are staying. London soon disappoints Hezekiah, who takes his last shilling and heads to the Blue Coat Boy. It’s Saturday fight night and ruling over it all is the self declared emperor of the East End criminal boxing scene, Sugar Goodson. And Hezekiah fancies his chances.
