Reddick has made it clear that he’s going to the Deputy Commissioner with the real story behind Skinner’s death, and offers Holder a chance to come clean now and cut a deal. Holder knows he has to choose between remaining loyal to Sarah or being there for Caroline and his child. Sarah, too, feels the pull of her conscience, and the constant strain affects her work. Reddick’s gamble seems to be working as Sarah and Holder begin to turn on each other, but will their long history and all that they’ve been through be enough to hold them together?
5. Truth Asunder

Reddick has managed to locate Skinner’s body in the lake, and along with it the bodies of all of his young victims. Sarah and Holder watch helplessly as Reddick inches closer to finding out the real truth. Sarah assures Holder that nothing has changed – Reddick can’t possibly trace it back to her. They just need to stick to their story and go about their business.

Kyle continues to struggle dealing with daily life as the memories of the night of the murder begin to flood back in, all of which is made worse by the constant taunting and hazing by two of his fellow cadets. Sarah and Holder begin to suspect that the two boys could be involved in the murder and begin investigating their backgrounds, and find that one of them may have an illicit link to the Stansbury family.

The weight of her actions and the lies that continue to pile up take their toll on Sarah, and she wonders if she can keep up the façade. Holder assures her that she can make it through, and reiterates that he’s not going to prison for a scumbag like Skinner. He also confides in her that his girlfriend Caroline is pregnant. He has responsibilities now and can only afford to move forward and forget the past.
2. Unraveling

Still reeling from the fallout of her actions, Sarah struggles to focus on the Stansbury murder case as she continually has flashbacks to Skinner’s shooting. Released from the hospital, Kyle returns to school and an uncertain future. As his legal guardian and superintendent of the academy, Colonel Rayne does her best to insure that he has a smooth transition, though he continues to be taunted by his classmates. Sarah and Holder question the neighbor who made the 911 call and discover a disturbing connection between him and one of the members of the Stansbury family. The detectives go to Kyle and Colonel Rayne with their findings and it becomes more and more apparent that both Kyle and the Colonel are hiding something from them.

Sarah’s shooting of Skinner and the subsequent cover-up takes their toll on her and Holder’s lives. Sarah struggles with the moral implications of what she’s done and how the cover-up means that Kallie and the rest of Skinner’s victims will never be found. Holder reminds her that there’s no other course of action unless she wants to go to prison for the rest of her life – they need to stick to their story.
